I have started another hot rod project. Again I will be starting with a Dash Hot Rod body and then modifying it. This time I have decided to build a Rat Rod. It will require some heavy modification of the hot rod body.
I would also like to thank Joe. He provided the "POP" for this build... the wide white wall tires. I think you will agree if you look at the progression of this build the tires truly make and complete these rods!

The first order of business was remove and strip the paint off of the body. I soaked the body in rubbing alcohol about 4 days. It got a lot of the paint off however I still have more to remove.
Again I will be using one of my resin cast tops. However, this time I will remove some of the bulk from the back of the top.
First I chopped the back off of the hot rod and then removed some bulk from the back of the top.
Now it's time to start rebuilding the rear end. I will be using styrene in the reconstruction.
Making some progress... using some styrene the back end is now roughed in.
Making some progress... using some styrene the back end is now roughed in. It looks a litte boxy, but hopefully I will take care of that with some sanding, filling, filing, and shaping. Hopefully this will add some styling and help to reduce the boxy look of the rear.
Have rounded the edges with some trim and added a little character to the back with a light scallop in the middle rear.
I have also put a little flair to the back to pick up on the wedge shape of the front part of the car.
I then took the pipes from the Dash super modified kit and remove the nerf bars in order to add the headers.
I have been thinking about how I would like to finish this off and I am down to about three versions. I can't decide so I thought I would cast this body and have several different versions. You can read about that here.
Coming together... the resin cast with the pipes and the air breather.
Two Versions
Version 1 true Rat Rod
Version 2 with a 50's, 60's look and feel.
The Piece de resistance arrived in the mail this past Saturday. Joe, also known as "The Michelangelo of Michelin's" was kind enough to make some special tires for these rat rods. I think you will see as I do that the tires make all the difference. Thanks Joe!!!
